Our bodies responses to stress play a critical role in managing our stress levels for the sake of our survival, to get us through an emotionally charged or threatening situation, even when negative consequences begin to outweigh benefits. Trying to stop a well-practiced stress-induced behavior is often not as easy as one might expect. Our brain is an adaptive organ, learning from our past behaviors and outcomes, storing and referencing them to use again in times of high stress.
